What is an Ultraviolet Filtration System?

Ultraviolet (UV) light treatment process involves inactivation of drinking water pathogens or the oxidation of micropollutants. During the oxidation process, it is commonly used in combination with hydrogen peroxide as a part of an advanced oxidation process. UV disinfection or oxidation is a physical process that utilizes UV light and does not require use of any chemicals. This technology is very effective for germicidal properties mainly inactivating microorganisms (i.e. bacteria, viruses, algae, etc.) including chlorine-resistant pathogens, such as Cryptosporidium.

Because of safety issues associated with the reliance of chlorination and improvement in the UV technology, UV has experienced increased acceptance in both municipal and household drinking water treatment systems. There are two classes of disinfection systems certified and classified by the NSF under Standard 55 – Class A and Class B Units. Class A point-of-entry (POE) and point-of-use (POU) systems covered by this Standard are designed to inactivate and/or remove microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cysts, from contaminated water. Class B POU and POE UV water treatment systems cannot have elevated levels of E. coli. This article discusses the various whole-house (POE) UV water purification systems available from APEC manufacturers.

Product Specifications & Features

The VIQUA VH410 UltraViolet Water Disinfection System is a high capacity whole-house purification system that disinfects water at the entry point and provides flow rate of up to 18 gpm. It uses the most advanced UV (ultraviolet) light technology on the market to effectively destroy 99.99% of bacteria, viruses & cysts to provide users with an unlimited supply of safe microbial-free drinking water. This system is also available in 2 other higher flow rate models – 30 gpm and  46 gpm for bigger families. The tables below summarize the benefits and specifications of the VIQUA VH410 model.

Effectively Destroy Microbial Contamination
This leading-edge UV technology will eliminate 99.99% of bacteria and viruses quickly and efficiently. Highly effective against chlorine resistant cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia that are not tested for in routine water tests.
Environmentally –friendly & Chemical free
A natural process that adds no harmful chemicals disinfectant such as chlorine to your water, and does not affect the taste or odor of water.
Trouble-free maintenance
Maintenance is simple and can be completed in minutes without tools. Just periodically clean the lamp sleeve and replace the UV lamp once a year.
Energy efficient
A UV system consumes about the same amount of energy as a 60-watt light bulb.

Benefits of the VIQUA VH410 UltraViolet Water Disinfection System

UV Filtration Systems have great advantages over conventional water treatment processes that utilize chlorine for disinfection. Some of the advantages can be summarized as follows:

  • Chemical Free: UV purification does not use any chemicals like chlorine or leave any harmful by products.
  • Taste & Odor Free: UV does not add any chemical taste or odor to the water.
  • Extremely Effective: One of the most effective ways to kill disease-causing microbes by destroying 99.99%.
  • Requires very little energy: Uses about the same energy as it would to run a 60- watt light bulb.
  • Low Maintenance: Set and forget type of system, just change the UV bulb annually.
