Benefits of a Whole-House Scale Inhibition Water Treatment System

Hardness of water is defined as the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hard water is a type of water with high hardness that contains very high amounts of calcium and magnesium. Groundwater typically has higher hardness as compared to surface water sources mainly because as water moves through soil and rock, it dissolves small amounts of naturally occurring minerals and carries them into the groundwater supply.

One of the effects of hard water is the inability to form soap lather. In the presence of hard water, the soap reacts with calcium and magnesium to form soap scum. This can result in using more soap or detergent to clean things that could be hair, laundry, or dishes. Using hard water can cause stains on dishes and silverware. More importantly, hard water can leave residue/ scale deposits of calcium carbonate in home appliances such as hot water heaters, coffee makers, etc. and subsequently cause increase in maintenance cost or reduce life of the equipment. Hard water can also clog household plumbing networks due to calcium-carbonate scale buildup. Whole-house scale inhibitor water treatment systems provide an effective solution to these issues. This article discusses the features and benefits of using the 3M™ Aqua-Pure™ Whole House Scale Inhibition Water Treatment System AP430SS.

Product Specifications: 3M™ Aqua-Pure™ Whole House Scale Inhibition Water Treatment System

The 3M™ AP430SS Whole House Scale Inhibition Water Treatment System contains polyphosphates to bind calcium and magnesium hardness minerals, preventing them from precipitating out (or becoming a solid) and building up on metallic surfaces such as water heaters and plumbing fixtures like faucets, pipes and shower heads. Research studies have shown that the formation of scale on surfaces in potable water systems is due to the crystallization of carbonates or sulfates of magnesium or calcium from solution. Very low levels of polyphosphates (1-10 ppm) interfere with crystal growth, thus inhibiting scale formation. Polyphosphates also help remove existing hard deposited carbonate or sulfate scales in the plumbing network.  Figure below shows a typical installation of the AP430SS system.

The AP430SS system is designed to reduce scale build-up on hot water-using appliances such as water heaters (standard and tank-less), clothes washers and dishwashing machines, and on plumbing fixtures like faucets, pipes, and shower heads. The AP430SS provides unrestricted flow of up to 10 gpm or 37.9 lpm. The overall design of the scale inhibition system makes the installation and cartridge change-out easy for professionals. The AP430SS Water Treatment System should be installed on the cold-water supply line of the water heater or at point-of-entry of water into the home or light commercial application. The AP430SS system has a maximum operating pressure of 125 psi (862 kPa) and operating temperature of 100 °F (37.8 °C). The scale inhibition system helps extend the life of downstream water-using appliances such as water heaters (standard and tank-less), clothes washers and dishwashing machines, as well as plumbing fixtures like faucets, pipes and shower heads by reducing scale build-up and corrosion. Table below summarizes the technical specifications of the AP430SS system.

Easy change out of the 3M Aqua-Pure AP431 Replacement Water Cartridge makes system maintenance easy and convenient. The 304 stainless steel head can be installed on existing copper pipes in the home. It consists of a corrosion resistant material that provides long service life.

Residential water-heaters and several other home appliances can be severely affected by the characteristics of water supplied to these appliances. Use of hard water containing high contents of calcium and magnesium can cause scale buildup and corrosion of the plumbing network decreasing the lifespan of the appliances and increasing maintenance cost. The 3M™ AP430SS Whole House Scale Inhibition Water Treatment System provides a great solution to all the issues caused due to scale buildup from hard water.
